Many of us connect with students, colleagues, and clients on WhatsApp. But a recent incident involving a student's account highlights a growing concern: WhatsApp identity theft.

In my case, a scammer impersonated a student I know by using her profile picture and name. Here's how I spotted the red flags:

  • New Number, Familiar Face: The message came from an unknown number, but the profile picture and name matched my student's. This is a common tactic to trick you into thinking it's a legitimate contact with a new number.

  • Generic Greeting: The message lacked a personalized greeting, opting for a generic "How are you doing?" This can be a sign the scammer is targeting multiple people and hasn't reviewed past conversations.

  • Urgent Financial Request: The conversation quickly escalated to a request for a significant money transfer, bypassing a phone call and offering vague promises of repayment. Legitimate requests for help wouldn't involve upfront payments and would likely involve a phone call for explanation.

  • Phrases to Watch Out For: The scammer used phrases like "you will receive it" and "it will be refunded." Genuine requests for help tend to use clearer language about the repayment process.

Thankfully, I recognized the scam and contacted my student directly. She was unaware of the compromised account and immediately took steps to secure it.

Here's what we learned from this incident:

WhatsApp scams can exploit profile pictures, names, and possibly contact information if malware is present on the user's device.

Be cautious of messages from familiar contacts, especially if they involve:

  • A new phone number

  • Generic greetings

  • Urgent financial requests

  • Vague promises of repayment

Stay Safe on WhatsApp:

  • Verify any suspicious requests with a phone call or video chat.

  • Enable two-step verification for added security.

  • Be cautious of downloading unknown apps or using WhatsApp Web on unsecured devices.

By sharing this experience, I hope to raise awareness and prevent others from falling victim to similar scams. Let's all be vigilant and protect ourselves and our network on WhatsApp.
